Scoring

HOW A CROSS COUNTRY MEET IS SCORED

  • The first five finishers from each team score; that is, the sum total of the place numbers of the first five runners from a team is its score in a meet. The team with the lowest score wins. Should one team have five runners finish in the top five places in a given race, the resulting score for that team would be "15" (1+2+3+4+5=15), which is a perfect score in cross-country.
  • The first seven finishers from each team place; that is, each of these seven may displace runners from another team, causing its score to be higher. In a dual meet, should one team have its seven runners finish in the top seven places before any of the opponents five scorers finish, the resulting score of the meet would be "15-50" (8+9+10+11+12=50), which is a shutout in cross-country. (Of course, in an invitational or championship meet with many teams competing in a race, it is possible to score above "50.")
  • In a dual meet, if one team captures the first three places in a race, it is mathematically impossible to lose.
  • A tie in team scoring will be broken by awarding the win to the team with the faster sixth finisher.

TRINITY LEAGUE SCORING

There are two Trinity League meets during the season, a Preview Meet & League Finals.

In League competition, although all teams run at once, every team is actually running a dual meet vs their 6 Trinity League competitors. A team earns one point for every team that it beats.

The Preview Meet and League Finals each count as ½ the points toward the Trinity League Championship; however the overall team winner at League Finals earns one extra point.

Total points scored from the Preview Meet & League Finals determine the ultimate League Champions.

Example:  (Finals only)

SM         34

MD         45

SJB        67

Ser         68

BA        105

SM earns a point from each team it beat (4) + 1 extra point = 5

MD beat 3 teams & earns 3 pts.

SJB beat 2 teams & earns 2 pts.

Ser beat 1 team and earned 1 pt.

BA 0 wins & 0 pts.
