The 2010 Season Comes to a Close with 6 League Champions

Frosh soph headliners Jason Engel and Matt Graban stole the show by both bringing home 2 individual Trinity league titles. Engel having captured his first league title last week in the 3200m Final, showed the league his toughness with a huge negative split in the 1600m final. With a pedestrian pace set early on, Jason carried the pace setting load for the second half of the race and dared anyone to challenge him. Finishing the race with a 2:12.6 closing 800, Jason continued to pull away from the field in the final 200 meters en route to his second frosh soph league title with a time of 4:37.67.

Matt Graban had the bull's-eye on his back going into League Finals as the top qualifier in both the 100m and the 200m. Taking this challenge in stride, Matt did not disappoint as he claimed the frosh soph league championship in the 100m in a time of 11.43. Coming back in the 200m at the end of the day, Matt took it to the field right out of the blocks and got his second league crown of the day with a time of 23.40.

The J.V. 4 x 400m team of Jesse Pascual, Aaron Chancellor, Lars Hierholzer, and Sam Hewitt claimed the lone relay league championship with a time of 3:40.49. Pascual passed off to Chancellor who had just retained his second P.R. of the day in the 200(400-55.28 / 200-23.88) only moments prior to the 4 x 400m. Aaron exhibited his toughness by coming back in the mile relay and dong his job of keeping the team in contention. Chancellor passed off to the J.V. Long Jump League Champion Lars Hierholzer, who continued to make giant leaps at the end of the year, and took over the lead on the backstretch while running a lifetime best of 53.6. Lars passed off to next year’s returning hurdler Sam Hewitt, who never relinquished the lead and brought home the title with a split of 54.5.

Construction on Baker Street in Costa Mesa

Please see the e mail below from Mater Dei Head Coach Rick Martinez with regards to construction on Baker Street in Costa Mesa. Please plan accordingly.

Thank you.

Coaches,

I just walked outside and noticed that the City of Santa Ana started tearing up Baker Street (street to the east of the track). I do not believe this will impact the running of the meet at all but it will affect parking if your parents typically park in the city streets to the east of Mater Dei. Please communicate with your parents that Mater Dei has 3 parking lots. The east parking lot off of Monarch Way next to our Meurello Athletic Center, the Bristol parking lot next to our Baseball field, and the Edinger lot which is located in the northeast corner of the Bristol and Edinger. All parking lots will be available and should be sufficient for the meet. Please encourage them to not parking in the city streets especially now that Baker is being broken up.

Rick Martinez

Freshman Distance Standout's Engel/Spraker and Sprinter Matt Graban Make California's Top 30 Frosh Soph List

As the season nears its conclusion and the athlete's begin to reach peak form, Santa Margarita's two distance headliners Jason Engel and Jeff Spraker are reaching new plateaus. Jason Engel's time of 4:34.03 ranks him 10th amongst all Freshman in the state of California, and Jeff Spraker's time of 4:39.08 ranks him 26th in the state with other 9th graders. Jason's huge lifetime best in the 3200m at League Prelims last week of 10:13.80, puts him 29th in the state amongst all other freshman as well. In the sprints, Sophmore Matt Graban's 23.10 200 run at League Prelims ranks him as the 23 fastest sophmore in California.

2010 League Prelims Is In The Books

Matt Graban Has a Marquis Day

Double P.R. of 11.24/23.10 to make him the Top Qualifier going into League Finals in the 100/200...

..the job isn't done yet for the Eagles..

The Eagles will send 13 individual qualifiers from League Prelims to League Finals next week for what will possibly be their last meet of the year. The Varsity will be represented by Connor Prior in the 400, and the 800m trio of Derek Giemont, Mike Holcomb and Patrick Stege. The Future of the Eagles Track program will be well represented at the Frosh Soph level; Jason Engel, Jeff Spraker and Guido Marasigan will compete in the 1600m. The sprint tandem of Matt Graban and Matt Scott will be present for the 100m, with Graban coming back to double in the 200m as well. Jeff Spraker will double back in the 800 and looks to break the 2:10 barrier for the first time in his career. With the 3200m Final in the books, the Eagles crowned their first League Champion of the year. Jason Engel went wire to wire for the two mile victory, with Marasigan taking 5th place to put the bookend on the year for the frosh soph two mile. At the J.V. level, Lars Hierholzer and Cody Krachtivil went 1-2 in the Long Jump Final. J.V. qualifiers also include Aaron Chancellor in the 400/200 and Derek Smith in the 100m.

On a day better suited for sailing, the Eagle's brought their A game despite Gail force winds early on. The Frosh Soph crowned their first League Champion as Jason Engel claimed the 3200m League Title in a lifetime best of 10:13.80. At the J.V. Level, the Eagles went 1-2 in the Long Jump Final. Lars Hierholzer claimed the League Title with a jump of 18'09".5 with Second place going to Cody Krachtvil with a jump of 18'01".75.

In the Frosh Soph 1600m, the freshman trio of Engel, Spraker, and Marasigan ran a smart 4:50.23(Engel), 4:51.28(Spraker), 4:52.98(Marasigan) to move on to Finals in what will be one of the highlighted races of the day.

In the frosh soph 100m, a brisk tail wind helped our short sprinters to some huge lifetime best's. Qualifying for League Finals, Matt Graban dropped his P.R. from 11.66 to an eye popping 11.24. Matt Scott followed that up with a lifetime best of his own at 11.48. Other notable frosh soph 100m runners are Blaine Rieger(11.68) and Josh Baldus(11.79).

In the 2 lap event, Jeff Spraker executed a smart race plan that led to a big negative split, more importantly qualifying Jeff for finals next week. With a time of 2:14.20 into a big head wind on the back stretch, better weather Friday should offer Jeff the opportunity to break the 2:10 barrier.

The lone frosh soph qualifier in the 200, Matt Graban flirted with a 22 second 200, with a LARGE lifetime best of 23.10. Other notable F/S 200 runners were Scott (24.01), Costa (24.16), and Potter (24.65).

At the J.V. level, Aaron Chancellor battled the notorious back stretch head wind to qualify for the 400m final. Chancellor missed the meat of the training regimen in the middle of the season while he battled a hamstring injury, but never gave up and earned a berth in the 400m. Chancellor then came back an hour later and ran a P.R. in the 200(24.15), good enough to earn another spot at League Finals. Senior Derek Smith ran his way into the 100m Final next week with a time of 12.04, as well as a spot on the short relay. The gutsy J.V. 4 x 400m team of Jesse Pascual, Aaron Chancellor, J.V. Long Jump League Champion Lars Hierholzer, and recently anointed 300m hurdler Sam Hewitt, look to showcase their determination and grit and take the League Title at the end of the day Friday May 7th.

Connor Prior looks to get back to his mid-season form and drop his P.R. in the 400m. Giemont, Holcomb, and Stege fought to live another week in a stacked 800m field. These guys have one more chance to make the Sub-2 Minute club and are eyeing the At-Large mark for a chance to make it to C.I.F. Prelims

A Successful Day at Orange County Championships Bodes Well For the Future of the Eagles

Despite missing a number of athletes to their Confirmations, the Eagles stepped up in a big way at Orange County Championships with 7 Lifetime best's on only 9 total events. With the county's best athletes in attendance, the future of the boys track program never looked brighter. The freshman distance duo of Jason Engel and Jeff Spraker stole the show with two lifetime P.R.s each.

Senior Mike Holcomb in his final Orange County Championship set the tone for the day by running a mentally tough race. Despite a fast pace early, Mike held strong to his race plan and never deviated. Mike finally broke the ever elusive 4:30 barrier for the first time in his track career with a time of 4:28.69, good enough for a 6th place finish in the boys varsity Rated mile.

After missing a couple weeks with a tender hamstring, Jason Engel came back with a vengeance on Saturday with a 4 second improvement in the frosh soph seeded mile with a time of 4:34.03. Jason placed 9th overall on the day out of a total of 60 competitors, making him the third fastest freshman amongst the entire County. Jason came back a couple of hours later to test his merit in the 3200. With the pace pushed from the start of the race, Jason managed to weather a 4:59 opening mile, and hang on to finish the race with a 6 second P.R. lowering his best 2 mile time to 10:18.95, breaking the 10:20 barrier for the first time this year. With that 10:18.95, Jason finished 19th overall at the frosh soph level, and was the 4th fastest freshman amongst the rest of the County.

Jason's counterpart, Jeff Spraker, also decided to up the ante with a 7 second P.R. in that same Seeded mile running a very respectable 4:39.08, placing him as the number 6 freshman miler in the county. To make a good thing better, Jeff came back in the 800 and inched the standard of his P.R. up a notch with a 2:12 59, a little less than half a second better than his previous mark.

In the sprints, Sophomore Justin Potter inched closer to breaking the 55 mark in the 400 with a lifetime best of 55.10, placing him 23rd overall in the frosh soph 400. Showing improvements at the tail end of the season, Justin will have League Prelims and Finals to drop his 400 into the 54's.

Continuing to flirt with the sub 2 minute club, Junior Derek Giemont ran his first 2 flat 800 with a time of 2:00.52 in the boys Varsity 800, placing him 21st in the county. His two lap compadre, Senior Patrick Stege held on to finish 2:02.19
